Toyota is branching out from just making cars. According to Fortune, the company’s robotics division has a new product in development that could help the blind and visually impaired navigate through indoor spaces.The auto giant yesterday unveiled “Project BLAID,” a wearable device that resembles a small non-plush neck travel pillow that is worn on a shoulder. It contains cameras that Toyota claims can recognize escalators, stairs, and doors.
Speakers and vibration motors built into the device communicate information about the surroundings to the user, such as wear doors are located, signs for restrooms and other objects.
So far, no word from Toyota on when this device will be available to the public.
