Safety Planning

Since 2017, the SRTC Board has annually expressed a commitment to reducing and ultimately, eliminating fatal and serious injury crashes on roadways in the planning area. This commitment is especially important in an environment in which the data suggests those sorts of crashes are on the rise. At the core of SRTC’s commitment is a concept known as the “Safe System Approach”. The Safe System Approach works by building and reinforcing multiple layers of protection to both prevent crashes from happening in the first place and minimize the harm caused to those involved when crashes do occur.

In the spirit of thinking beyond changes to the physical environment, SRTC pursued and was awarded funding through the Safe Streets and Roads for All grant to develop a pilot educational campaign. The campaign will test different messaging strategies to determine the most effective way to positively impact the behavior of those using the transportation network in Spokane County.
