Planning for Technology

As technology rapidly advances in many ways, including vehicle development and transportation system management, SRTC looks to be prepared for technological changes that will impact our region. Moreover, SRTC considers strategic investments in technology as a pathway for promoting efficiency and safety in regional travel. Read below to learn more about how we are preparing for the evolution of transportation technology.

Smart Mobility Plan

The Smart Mobility Plan focuses on current and emerging transportation technologies and evaluates potential technology solutions to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of the region’s transportation system. The Plan explores technologies in use today and how they can be expanded as well as how to prepare for and adopt new and future innovations.

The Plan outlines transportation planning steps and recommendations for investments to better leverage technology solutions to meet regional transportation goals. These findings and recommendations will be used by SRTC and local jurisdictions in Spokane County to advance future projects, programs, and plans. As a next step, it will be incorporated into a regional transportation needs assessment in early 2025.

The Smart Mobility Plan was adopted by the SRTC Board of Directors on December 12, 2024.

Resiliency

This plan was conducted simultaneously with the Smart Mobility project. Resiliency considers the regional transportation system’s ability to respond to major disruption and overlaps with the findings of this study.

Horizon 2050

Both the Resiliency and Smart Mobility Plans are foundational work that will help inform the update of SRTC’s long-range plan, Horizon 2050. This plan looks 20 years into the future to identify significant transportation projects and investments, as well as potential regional growth and challenges.

Regional ITS Architecture Plan

A Regional Planning & Engineering Resource

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) involve the application of advanced technologies to monitor, evaluate, and manage transportation networks, enhancing efficiency and safety. The Spokane region has an established history of utilizing ITS, with most major transportation projects today incorporating ITS components.

What is the Spokane Regional Management Center (SRTMC)?

The Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center (SRTMC) is the primary hub for ITS collaboration between agencies in the Spokane region. The SRTMC aims to create a safe and efficient travel experience for everyone by providing 24/7 local and regional transportation information. The SRTMC shares current critical information and live updates about a variety of travel conditions. SRTC is a partner agency of the SRTMC and serves as an ex-officio member of the SRTMC Operations  Board.

SRTMC led the development of the current Regional ITS Architecture and is responsible for maintaining it.
