The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) invites you to learn more about a roundabout project and other intersection improvements that will be constructed this summer on US 2 at the west edge of Airway Heights.

On Wednesday, July 12, the Spokane Tribe of Indians, in cooperation with the WSDOT and the City of Airway Heights, will host an informational open house to highlight construction details of the roundabout that will provide access to the new STEP Development and Spokane Tribe Casino near the US 2/Craig Road intersection. The open house is from 6-8 p.m. at the Airway Heights Community Center at 13120 W. 13th (13th & Lundstrom).

There is no formal presentation. During the open house, Spokane Tribe and WSDOT staff will discuss the schedule for the work as well as construction impacts that will affect all users of the road.

The Tribe conducted an analysis, as part of their planning and approval process with federal and state agencies, to determine the traffic safety and congestion effects of the casino on US 2. The results indicated that a roundabout would be the best strategy to safely handle the increased traffic at the entrance to the new casino. WSDOT’s traffic engineers are in agreement with the study’s conclusions.

An engineering consulting firm is working with the Tribe to complete the design and build a multi-lane roundabout on US 2 and the casino entrance, located near Craig Road on the north side of US 2. Improvements will also be constructed at the Craig Road intersection.  Construction will be underway and completed this summer. The consulting engineering firm will manage the private contractor that constructs the new intersection. The project will be fully funded by the Spokane Tribe.
