Spokane’s City Council last night made good on it’s promise to move Photo Red money into a traffic calming fund to pay for neighborhood safety projects. Councilman Jon Snyder posted this thread about the process and last night’s meeting on his blog.
Photo Red cameras are pretty controversial, not just in Spokane but across the state. As long as the money is going to neighborhood safety projects, are you okay with the Photo Red program? If not, why?
I saw the council meeting last night and I want to thank all the red light runners for the money to do these traffic calming measures.
Woo hoo red light runners!! Oops, I forgot we're not supposed to encourage that behavior. It's downright unsafe. Hopefully paying a fine will make the folks who get caught doing this think twice about making it through the yellow light in the future. A woman in our office got caught by one of the cameras and was MAD. She tried saying she shouldn't have gotten a ticket because it was very late at night and there was no traffic, but a red light is a red light.
And by "no traffic" did your co-worker actually mean "no cars"?
LBDS (Look But Don't See) behavior by drivers leads to injuries for people walking or biking. I know that before I started bike commuting I was probably pretty sloppy in my assumptions about what to look out for when I "looked" to see if anyone was coming.
I'm a much better driver (when I do drive) now that I bike, walk and take transit for the majority of my transportation.
@BarbChamberlain
Holy smokes I'm glad to see that something makes sense…catch the red light runners and make them pay for the safety projects…..Priceless! Lets get some more red light camera's asap!!
Thanks

Thanks for the comment Chris. I've heard a LOT of opinions on red light cameras, but never that we should get more. There are a lot of folks who consider them to be simply money makers for the jurisdictions that use them so it's good to see the money going to something that promotes safety.
