The North Spokane Corridor (NSC) is expected to be complete in about a decade. The south section will be elevated to avoid some existing structures and natural features, such as Spokane Community College’s parking lot and the Spokane River. Which means the view could be ugly if you are under that overpass. But it doesn’t have to be. An article on Curbed today features 11 underpasses that have been turned into parks— trading trash, overgrown weeds, and dark passageways with art installations, lights, and pedestrian thoroughfares.
One is the I-5 Colonnade Bike Park in Seattle, which turned a scary part of the are into a skateboarding and mount biking destination. In Toronto, a just-completed project created an ice rink under the highway. There are also parks that include pedestrian boardwalks, bike paths, a dog park and public art installations, including murals painted on the face of underpass walls.
Besides the pictures here, there is some pretty cool stuff so check it out at the link above.
